Soft Fork

A soft fork is a change of the rules of the software, which creates a new version. What is special about a soft fork is that it is forward compatible, which means the old version of the software will be considered valid or compatible with the new version. In reference to Bitcoin, when a soft fork is implemented, users would not have to upgrade to the new version. Instead, only miners would. Although, if a miner did not want to upgrade or if they forgot to upgrade, they could still mine blocks that are compatible with the updated version of the Bitcoin protocol software.
